Create and manage Teams
A Team is a reusable group of members. Add people to a Team once, then grant the Team a role instead of maintaining the same access for each person.
Choose the Team type
Section titled “Choose the Team type”| Team type | Who can join | Where it can receive access | Who manages it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organization Team | Any organization member, including administrators | The namespaces it is attached to | Organization administrators |
| Namespace Team | Members of its namespace | Its namespace and repositories inside it | Organization administrators and that namespace’s administrators |
Use an organization Team for a group such as Security that works across
several namespaces. Use a namespace Team for a group such as Payments
Release that belongs to payments only.
Create a Team
Section titled “Create a Team”- Organization Team: open organization settings, select Teams, choose Create Team, and keep Organization Team as the scope.
- Namespace Team: in the namespace workspace, open Teams and choose New namespace Team. Organization administrators can also choose Namespace Team and a namespace when using Create Team.
Open the Team to manage it. The Team page has these sections:
| Section | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Members | Add and remove people, then Save members |
| Namespaces | Organization Teams only: the namespaces the Team is attached to |
| Repositories | The repository access the Team gives its members, grouped by namespace, and Grant access |
| Settings | Name, description, and Archive Team or Restore Team |
Attach an organization Team to namespaces
Section titled “Attach an organization Team to namespaces”Attaching an organization Team to a namespace makes every Team member a member of that namespace, so they receive its base permission.
- Open the Team and select Namespaces.
- Select Change namespaces.
- Choose Every namespace, which includes namespaces created later, or choose specific namespaces.
- Select Save namespaces.
Attachment adds membership, not extra access. To give the Team more than the base permission, open Repositories and choose Grant access. A Team can receive a role only in namespaces it is attached to; a role on every repository in the organization requires attachment to Every namespace.
Removing a namespace from the Team removes the Team’s grants there. People who belonged to that namespace only through the Team leave it; people with another membership source stay.
Namespace Teams
Section titled “Namespace Teams”A namespace Team can contain only members of its namespace. When someone leaves the namespace, they are removed from its namespace Teams. Grant a namespace Team a role on the whole namespace or on specific repositories inside it.
Archive a Team
Section titled “Archive a Team”Archive Team stops its members from receiving access through the Team and freezes its members. Restore Team brings the access back.
Who can see Teams
Section titled “Who can see Teams”Organization members see the Teams they belong to under Teams. Namespace members can view the namespace Teams and attached organization Teams in the namespace workspace. Only the Team’s administrators can change it.
Everyone is not a Team
Section titled “Everyone is not a Team”To give every member of a namespace the same access, set the namespace base permission instead of creating a Team that contains everyone.
Next, grant the Team a role.
