Turbo mode for large downloads

Turbo mode delivers large downloads straight from the storage that holds them. It is on by default for every account, on every plan, and needs no change to your package tools.

When a developer or a build asks for a big payload, such as a large package file, a container image layer, or a Helm chart, Ravenstash checks access as it does for every download. It then lets the tool fetch that one file directly from storage instead of from the Ravenstash host the tool is configured with.

  • Faster large downloads. Turbo mode can reach up to 1 gigabit per second. The gain shows on fast connections, such as CI runners in a data center. On a slower link the link itself is the limit and you may see no difference. Ravenstash does not guarantee a speed for an individual download.
  • Access is still checked for every download. Storage only serves a file that Ravenstash has just authorized. What the tool receives works for that one file, for a short time, and contains no Ravenstash credential.
  • Nothing to configure. Repository URLs, credentials, and rvs commands stay the same.

The alternative is standard delivery: the file comes from the Ravenstash host itself, through the delivery network.

Turbo mode applies to large downloads only. Ravenstash decides which downloads are large enough to benefit; you do not set a size.

Download Delivery
A large package file, container image layer, or Helm chart, downloaded in full Turbo mode
Smaller files Standard delivery
Resumed and partial downloads Standard delivery
Package indexes, metadata, checksums, and image manifests Standard delivery

The same rules apply to private repositories, private mirrors, and files a repository serves from another repository or a private mirror connected as an upstream.

Turbo mode works with Ravenstash-managed storage. For storage your organization owns, an organization administrator must also allow direct downloads for that storage in the organization’s storage settings. Until then, files kept there use standard delivery.

Turbo mode does not change how artifact reads are counted. A large download counts as one artifact read with either kind of delivery.

You might turn Turbo mode off when:

  • your network, proxy, or firewall only allows Ravenstash hosts and you cannot add the storage hosts;
  • a tool fails on large downloads and you cannot change its settings; or
  • you want every download to come from the Ravenstash hosts you already use.

The control is named Artifacts delivery Turbo mode. It is in the Danger zone:

  • Organization: an organization administrator opens the organization’s settings, then Danger zone.
  • Personal account: open your account settings, then Danger zone.

There is one setting per organization or personal account. It covers every repository, upstream, and private mirror of that account; there is no separate setting for a namespace, repository, or mirror.

A change applies to the next download. With Turbo mode off, every download uses standard delivery, whatever the tool. You can turn it back on at any time.

With Turbo mode, a tool downloads large files over HTTPS (port 443) from a storage host as well as from the Ravenstash hosts. If your network only allows listed hosts, also allow these:

  • Ravenstash Turbo compatibility host: art-turbo-compat.rvsta.sh. Some tools pass through it on the way to storage. If you already allow every host ending in .rvsta.sh, it is covered.
  • Ravenstash-managed storage: hosts ending in .r2.cloudflarestorage.com. Storage in the European Union uses hosts ending in .eu.r2.cloudflarestorage.com, which the same rule covers.
  • Your organization’s Cloudflare R2 storage: the same hosts.
  • Your organization’s OVH Object Storage: hosts ending in .io.cloud.ovh.net or .cloud.ovh.us, depending on the storage region.

Match these names by their ending. A storage host has several name levels before it, so a pattern that covers only one level, such as a single *, may not match.

Keep the Ravenstash hosts allowed too: every download starts there. If the storage hosts cannot be allowed, turn Turbo mode off. Ravenstash cannot see that a network blocked a storage host, so these downloads do not switch to standard delivery by themselves.

Last tested: October 9, 2026.

Ravenstash ran real downloads of large files with the tools and versions below. Each one is in one of three states:

  • Works with Turbo mode. Nothing to do.
  • Uses standard delivery automatically. Ravenstash serves the download through standard delivery for you. Nothing to do.
  • Needs a change on your side. Large downloads fail until you change a client setting, allow the storage hosts, or turn Turbo mode off.

A range gives the oldest and the newest release that ran. Every uv release in its range ran, and every pip release except 20.0; for other tools, not every release in between was run. Releases newer than the range were not tested. Releases older than the range that cannot use Turbo mode use standard delivery automatically.

Tools and versions that are not listed are also sent through Turbo mode. If one of them has trouble with large downloads, turn Turbo mode off.
